Abstract

The purpose of this research was to obtain a description of the results: (1) The principal leadership in SMA Negeri I Manado, (2) factors that support the principal leadership in SMA Negeri I Manado, (3) factors that inhibit the principal leadership in SMA Negeri I Manado, and (4) efforts made to overcome the obstacles of the principal leadership in SMA Negeri I Manado. This research uses a qualitative approach.  This research was conducted in SMA Negeri I Manado in Manado City. Data were collected by interview, observation and documentation study.  Data were analyzed with the interaction model. Based on the findings, it was concluded that: (1) the principal leadership refers to participatory leadership that can be reflected in terms of the principal give an opportunity to the vice principals, teachers, and school committee to participate in the decision making process at the school, (2) factors that support the principal leadership is a factor such as educational background, a person who has a doctoral degree in the field of management and the support of the vice principals and teachers, (3) factors that inhibit the principal leadership is a factor too much time is spent in meetings and lack of courage teachers to participate in the decision-making process at the school, (4) the efforts made by the principal to overcome barriers to leadership as head of the school is to give every teachers the opportunity to speak at the meeting for about 5 minutes or more without represented by another teacher, as a form of participation in all activities in the school meeting. The conclusion based on this research suggested that: (1) participative leadership principal need to be improved so that the decision making process more qualifield, (2) the participation of teachers, vice-principals, and school committees need to be improved so that the quality of participative leadership in schools is increased, (3) principals need to effectively manage the factors that support and inhibit the positive in order to work towards the development of participative leadership in school, and (4) needs to be futher investigated by studies on participative leadership in relation to participatory decision-making process at the school.
